Why Spending Big Bucks on a Custom Solution for Your Promotional Staffing Agency is the Worst Idea Ever

With the rapid advancement of technology, it’s becoming increasingly important for promotional staffing agencies to utilize tech to succeed. One trend we’ve noticed is agencies building their own custom solutions.  

That’s a terrible idea!

Are you thinking about investing in your own custom solution, too? Here are some reasons why that is a really bad idea:

 

It’s expensive.

The average web application costs anywhere from $5,000-$100,000. This of course depends on the quality of your developers and the end product, but even the simplest application will cost you quite a bit.

Want a mobile app, too? Make that “mobile apps,” plural. If you are going mobile, you need to have both iOS and Android apps available.

The average mobile app costs $20,000-$70,000. And I mean “average.”

Want something as good as Uber? You’re looking at $100,000-$300,000.

And those numbers are for EACH mobile app. Add both of them together for the total sticker price for a mobile app. For example, $40,000 for iPhone + $40,000 for Android.

So if you plan to invest in a custom solution, you can safely assume you will spend $150,000 for everything.

 

It takes A LOT of time.

How much is your time worth? $50/hr? $100/hr?

In addition to the large upfront price tag for developing your own solution, add onto that price the amount of time you’ll be spending working with developers when you could be working on your business instead.

Working with developers takes a lot of time. Think about it: you have to teach people an entire industry. How can you expect a tech guy to fully understand an industry that took you years to master in just an hour or two? This means you are thinking through a lot of what the software needs to do, which takes even MORE of your time.

Budget 3-9 months for a project of this size.

 

Upkeep takes money, too.

Technology moves fast. In fact, it’s moving faster everyday. When you have your own proprietary solution, it’s your responsibility to keep it updated.

Did Google make an update to its operating system? Has Apple done a major update? Did Microsoft launch a new browser? These are all examples of times when you will have to shell out big bucks to update your technology and stay relevant and compatible.

 

Developers come and go.

We’ve had plenty of agencies switch from their own solution to an out-of-the-box solution like ours. Why would that be? Well, most of the time they can’t get ahold of the people who built it for them anymore!

Developers are per-project workers. Unless you have a contract for maintenance, you are going to have a hard time getting updates done when you need them. Once your project is complete, the people who coded your app will have to move onto other projects to pay the bills. This makes it tough to find someone who knows your code well enough each time you need an update. If the person who originally coded your app is not available, a new person has to learn the code. (Oh, and guess what? You will be paying for them to learn.)
