Hiring event staff is a whole different ball game than hiring full-time employees. Working events requires a nuanced set of skills that you need to uncover during the interview process if you are going to see success. We have identified 5 interview questions that can aid you in your search for the perfect event staff!
1. Do you own a car?
Depending on the market you are hiring in, this is an important question. Having reliable transportation will be critical in ensuring the candidate can show up for their shift in a timely manner. You want to avoid someone who would need to rely on someone else to give them a ride. It may seem like a silly question to ask, but it could save you a lot of potential headache from a late cancellation or call off.
2. Why do you think you would be a good fit for this job?
With temporary workers, a lot have gotten into bad habits when applying. One of these bad habits is not reading the job description. When you are always looking for work, it can be quite easy to submit interest without really vetting the opportunity. Your ideal candidates will be people who have an attention to detail and have relevant experience to the job posted.
3. Describe a time you failed at your job. What did you learn from it?
This is a telling question to ask someone. Not ideal candidates will deny they have any flaws. You want someone who is willing to take ownership when they are wrong and are willing to learn. They might not expect this question so they might have to think a bit about the answer. Let them process it and give you a good, well-thought out answer.
4. Give me an example of where you went above and beyond on the job.
A real rockstar will have a great honest answer for this handy. However, don’t write someone off that might not have an immediate answer to this question. Some people have a hard time gloating about themselves. Encourage them to really think about it and not brush it off with an “I don’t know.” Modest people might take the easy way out.
5. What questions haven’t I asked you that I should?
This question will really uncover rockstars. Mainly due to the fact that they will know what you need even before you need it. Be a little weary of someone who doesn’t have a suggested question for you. People who don’t have a suggestion fit one of two categories. Either they are a bit novice or they are doing the bare minimum.
